Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh, in the Himalayan foothills. Once the summer capital of British India, it remains the terminus of the narrow-gauge Kalka-Shimla Railway, completed in 1903. It’s also known for the handicraft shops that line The Mall, a pedestrian avenue, as well as the Lakkar Bazaar, a market specializing in wooden toys and crafts.

Places to Visit in Shimla

The Ridge

This large open space in the heart of town presents excellent views of the mountain ranges.

Lakkar Bazar

Popular for its wood crafts and Souvenirs, this is just off the Ridge.

St. Michael’s Cathedral

This dressed-stone church with fine stained glass has a cruciform design. It is located just off the Mall.

Johnnie’s Wax Museum

The museum feature life-size wax statues of popular personalities from various fields, such as Hollywood, Bollywood, Politicians, Sports etc.

State Museum (3km)

This houses a representative collection of Himachal’s rich heritage. Exhibits include archaeological artefacts, carvings, paintings and sculptures. Closed on Monday and holidays.

Indian Institute of Advanced Study (4 km)

This magnificent English renaissance structure was the former Viceregal Lodge. Its lawns and woodland are added attractions. Closed on Sundays and holidays.

Annandale (4.5 km)

Surrounded by a thick deodar forest, this large glade has an ancient temple on the edge.

Tara Devi (11 Km)

A thickly wooded hill with a temple dedicated to Tara Devi.

Kali Bari Temple

The famous Kalibari Temple of Shimla is a popular tourist attraction and is situated at a very strategic location. The temple was built in the year 1845 and is dedicated to Goddess Kali who is also known as Shyamala.

Jakhoo Temple (2.5 km)

It is situated on Jakhoo Hill  at a height of 2,455 m (8,000 feet) above sea level. It is situated at  highest peak of Shimla and offers a panoramic view of the Shivalik Ranges.

Mashobra (12 km)

This beautiful suburb is surrounded by thick forests. From here, a track leads down to Sipur which is an exquisite glade shaded by ancient deodar trees. There are old temples a fair is held every April.

Kufri (16 km)

This is famous for its wide views and ski slopes. An enjoyable walk leads up to the Mahasu Peak. At Kufri, Himachal Tourism runs Cafe Lalit.

Chail (45 km)

This was a former Summer Capital of the Patiala State. The Palace has been converted to a Luxury Hotel by Himachal Tourism
